The 2 day Annual Registrars’ and Magistrates’ Conference was officially opened by the Deputy Chief Justice , Richard Buteera on 14th December, 2023 at Hotel Africana.

The two-day Conference was held under the theme: *Making Access to Justice a Meaningful Contribution to Uganda's Transformation Journey*



The Deputy Chief Justice in his remarks noted that Registrars and Magistrates form the bulk of the Judicial Officers and that case backlog reduction shall greatly depend on their outputs at their respective stations of deployment.

He noted that theme of the conference was a reminder for all to recognise the role of the Judiciary in fostering of the rule of law through adjudication of cases that promote a crime free society for development.

The Executive Director of the Judicial Training Institute, Justice Damalie Lwanga, in her ramarks noted that the objective of the conference is to retool and refine the Registrars' and Magistrates with the professional skills and build their capacity in justice delivery. She appreciated the top management for the recent recruitment that has seen a big rise in their number of Judicial officers and congratulated those that have been promoted.

On a special note, she requested that a separate conference for Registrars be held next year to ably accommodate their growing numbers.

The Chief Registrar, Sarah Langa Siu, made a presentation on Performance Reports of Registrars, Chief Magistrates and Magistrates. She further updated them about various aspects in the Judiciary and emphasised the need to improve work relations with their colleagues. She encouraged them to always"soldier on" and uphold the basic principals of justice delivery to the people where they delive their powers from.

Later in the day, there were presentations on the Judiciary Innovations; and the use of ICT in the Administration of Justice as well as Practical Aspects of the Law on Bail; and the Constitution(Bail Guidelines for the Courts of Judicature) (Practice) Directions, 2022.
