The Deputy Chief Justice, Richard Buteera has this morning opened a two-week Induction/training for newly recruited Magistrates Grade I at Colline Hotel, Mukono.

The 88 Magistrates Grade I are being equipped with skills necessary for judicial service.



The Deputy Chief Justice urged the Magistrates to use their knowledge, skills and talents to advance “justice needs of our people whose cries for justice and freedom are ever growing.”

He added that the induction is meant to help them appreciate the judicial ethics, values and traditions their offices. 

The DCJ further implored the Magistrates to contribute ideas that will improve their places of work. "There will always be challenges but we should be on the side of solution–givers and not problem-identifiers," he added

He also urged the Magistrates to be ambassadors of Judiciary's new strategies to reduce case backlog such as Mediation, Plea-bargain, Small Claims Procedure, Diversion of cases for juvenile offenders, Arbitration and Reconciliation among others.

The Chairperson of the Governing Council Judicial Training Institute, the organisers of the induction, Justice Mike Chibita, noted that the training will enhance service delivery by refreshing their knowledge and capacity.

He pointed out that the Judiciary has no room for lack of integrity and laziness.

Adding that the aim of the induction is to improve their work and increase the quality of service delivery, encompassing adjudication, management, best practices, and judgment writing.

He also expressed gratitude to JTI for the training, which is highlighting the value of sharing experiences, acquiring a better understanding, and being able to collaborate with facilitators.

Lady Justice Damalie N. Lwanga said the induction was organized by JTI in line with its mission to offer specialized and ongoing training in the Judiciary that serves as a valuable opportunity for those working in the field to gain insights and consult on challenging areas they may encounter.

She further expressed gratitude to the Judiciary Top Management for providing the necessary funds to make the workshop and induction possible.

On Day One, the Magistrates will be taken through on the Structure and Functions of the Judiciary; the Administration of the Judiciary Act by the Chief Registrar, HW Sarah Langa Siu. HW Ereemye James Jumire Mawanda, the Registrar Magistrates Affairs and Data Management/PRO will then take them through the Management of Court Stations and Data Management and later an experience sharing session by HW Katushabe Prossy (Registrar JTI).

In attendance is HW, Faisal Mulalira (Acting Deputy Registrar JTI), HW Patricia Amoko (Private Legal Secretary to the Chief Registrar), and HW Gakyaro Mpirwe Allan (Personal Assistant to DCJ) among others.
